Case Study:
Commercial Decorating in Mayfair W1 – Precision Art Installation for Dirimart Gallery

When Simplicity Demands Absolute Precision

Working within an art gallery space always carries a different level of responsibility, and this project for Dirimart in Mayfair, W1, was a clear example of how minimalism can demand maximum precision.

The gallery approached us ahead of an upcoming exhibition with a specific request: to execute a key element of an artistic composition created by artists Özlem Günyol and Mustafa Kunt directly onto one of the gallery walls.

At first glance, the concept appeared simple – a composition of 19 overlapping rectangles. In reality, it was a highly delicate and technically demanding task where every millimetre mattered.

Translating an Artistic Vision into Physical Space

This was not a standard decorating job. It was not about simply painting a wall, but about faithfully translating an artistic vision into physical form without compromising its balance, rhythm or clarity.

Because the wall piece formed part of a larger installation, the execution had to remain fully aligned with the overall concept. Proportions had to be exact, spacing had to stay consistent, and the hierarchy of all 19 colours had to be preserved throughout the process. Even a very small inaccuracy could have disrupted the final visual effect.

Planning and Technical Preparation

From the outset, it was clear that success would depend on careful planning. This project required not only precision during execution, but also strong preparation behind the scenes.

All paints had to be selected accurately and delivered on time. A considerable amount of materials had to be organised in advance, and every stage of the work had to be scheduled carefully to avoid delays, interruptions or mistakes once the installation began.

The technical preparation started with laser-based layout work. Every line, distance and reference point had to be measured from the very beginning so that the composition would remain correct at the final stage as well. That early planning was critical, because any small discrepancy at the start would have affected the entire structure.

Execution with No Margin for Error

The execution stage demanded full concentration and control. Each of the 19 rectangles had its own place within the composition and had to be positioned with complete accuracy in relation to the others.

We used laser measurements, precise masking and a carefully controlled step-by-step application process. This allowed us to maintain sharp edges, consistent distances and the correct order of colours throughout the work.

In a minimalist artwork like this, there is nowhere to hide imperfections. The cleaner the form, the more visible the smallest fault becomes. That is why precision was not just part of the job here – it was the project itself.

Delivering Under Exhibition Deadline Pressure

The project had to be completed within 4 to 5 days, ahead of the exhibition opening. That created an additional layer of pressure, as quality had to remain uncompromised while the schedule stayed tight.

Alongside the main artistic installation, we also carried out several smaller works requested by the gallery, including wall repairs and painting to selected wall areas. These finishing tasks helped ensure that the whole space was fully prepared and presentation-ready before the exhibition.

The Final Outcome

The project was completed successfully and on time. Both artists — Özlem Günyol and Mustafa Kunt — as well as the team at Dirimart Gallery were very pleased with the final result.

For us, this project reflects what commercial decorating in Mayfair W1 can mean at a higher level: not just delivering a neat finish, but supporting a creative vision with planning, discipline and exceptionally precise execution.
