One of our long-standing clients in the heart of Kensington approached us once again — this time with a slightly different challenge. Having trusted us with multiple high-end renovations over the years, he asked if we could help transform the rooftop terrace of his property. The goal was to move away from exposed brickwork and create a clean, rendered and painted finish for the surrounding walls.
At first glance, the project may have seemed simple. In reality, it required technical knowledge, careful material selection, and the level of attention to detail that only comes from years of hands-on experience. Working in an exposed rooftop environment meant durability was just as important as visual quality — especially in London’s unpredictable climate.

Step 1: Preparation and Protection
As with every project we take on, preparation was key. We began by carefully protecting all non-painted surfaces using correx boards, polythene sheeting, and high-grade tape. We safeguarded lead flashings, timber decking, and delicate architectural features.
We then cleaned and prepared the brickwork, removing loose debris, failing mortar, and residual dust. Once the walls were thoroughly cleaned, we applied a mineral-specific stabilising primer and allowed it to dry fully over 24 hours — creating a solid foundation for the next layers.

Step 2: Reinforced Base Layer
Our client had a strong focus on durability, so instead of standard render methods, we applied a more advanced solution: a fibreglass-reinforced adhesive commonly used in external wall insulation systems. This offers outstanding strength and flexibility, ideal for rooftop settings.
To further stabilise the surface and prevent future cracks, we embedded a full external mesh into the render. Stop beads and corner beads were also installed to ensure sharp, clean edges — especially where the walls met leadwork junctions.

Step 3: Perfect Surface Finish
After the render was cured, we refined the surface using premium Toupret smoothing compounds. We sanded using dust-extraction equipment to keep the environment clean and provide the perfect base for paintwork.
We then applied an additional stabiliser layer to enhance adhesion and increase resistance to the elements.

Step 4: Final Painting
For the topcoat, we selected a high-performance exterior paint resistant to UV and moisture. It was applied in several even, methodical coats for full coverage and a clean finish.
The result completely transformed the rooftop terrace. The newly rendered and painted walls brought a fresh, elegant feel to the space — providing beauty and protection in equal measure.
