A well-maintained exterior communicates professionalism, reliability and attention to detail-qualities that matter across every industry.
When people think of professional painters and decorators, they often imagine residential interiors or commercial offices. But painting an art gallery is a world of its own – and it’s something I’ve grown to understand deeply over the years.
I’m Krzysztof Zwierzyński, and as someone who manages high-end decorating projects across London, I’ve learned that working in galleries requires a unique mindset, the right team, and absolutely no margin for error.
The Space Must Serve the Art – Not Compete With It
Painting a gallery is never just about aesthetics. It’s about supporting what will eventually live on those walls – the artworks. Every detail has to disappear in the best possible way. The surfaces must be clean, even, matte, and neutral, or subtly reflective depending on the lighting and curatorial intent.
Most of our gallery clients work closely with interior designers or exhibition architects. In many cases, we receive a detailed specification up front – exact colours, sheen levels, and even product ranges. In these situations, we execute with precision and care, making sure the final finish fully aligns with the vision.
But in the cases where we’re asked to recommend materials, we always propose finishes that are:
- durable and resistant to marking during installation,
- low-VOC and low-odour, so they don’t linger in the space,
- suited to conservation needs, such as breathable or mineral-based systems.
In short: we never guess. We know what works in these spaces, and we advise accordingly.
The Right People Make All the Difference
One of the things I’ve learned – and insist on as a project manager – is the absolute importance of choosing the right people for gallery work. It’s not just about skill. It’s about attitude.
I select decorators for these jobs who are not only experienced, but calm, focused, and discreet. They understand how to work quietly, how to prepare surfaces properly, how to move in delicate environments where priceless objects might be nearby – or arriving the next day. A distracted or careless worker doesn’t belong on a gallery project. Full stop.
That’s why I personally brief the team before every job, and often stay involved throughout. It’s a matter of pride – and of trust.
Timelines Are Not Flexible – and Trust Is Everything
If there’s one thing every gallery client will tell you, it’s this: the schedule cannot slip. Exhibitions are planned months in advance. Art arrives on a certain day. Invitations are sent. There’s no pushing the deadline.
We recently worked on a high-profile gallery project where we had only five days to fully repaint the main exhibition space – right between de-installation and artwork delivery. The plan was tight, but we delivered exactly as promised. No stress for the client. No delay for the show. That’s the level of trust we aim to build.
What It Really Means to Be a Professional Painter and Decorator
Being a professional painter and decorator in the context of an art gallery means more than just finish quality. It means:
- working invisibly and respectfully,
- managing logistics with precision,
- delivering the right materials, preparation, and protection,
- and never – ever – letting the timeline slip.
This is a responsibility I take seriously, and one that I pass on to every team member I work with.

Upcoming Project at David Zwirner Gallery
In August, we’re preparing to return to the wonderful and long-time partner, David Zwirner Gallery, located in Mayfair. We’ll be carrying out a range of internal decorating works, along with some external touch-ups – all under a strictly defined timeline. It’s always a pleasure to be trusted again by a client who values precision, consistency, and quality as much as we do.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for professional painters and decorators who understand the demands of art spaces – not just in theory, but in daily practice – I’d be happy to talk.
Gallery projects require a very specific balance of control, care and craftsmanship. That’s what we bring to every job.
Let the art speak. We’ll take care of the walls.
